Underdogs are defined by the struggles they overcome, the grace and composure with which they handle their hardships, and how well spectators can relate to their situation. Alex Smith represents  the archetypal underdog by enduring relentless criticism to achieve surprising success at the highest level. Though his success was short-lived, for one season he became the underdog we all root for and see in ourselves. Though Alex Smith may not appear to be a typical underdog story, he fits all the above criteria extremely well. Furthermore, in recent memory, there has not been a demoted who has garnered as much support and appreciation and generated as much discussion as Alex Smith. Evidently, Alex Smith’s situation differs from the tale of an average quarterback being replaced.
